Haiku Cards
Made by collaging images and found text onto discarded playing cards, my haiku cards are like little stories, or points of views.
I'm often asked what comes first, the image or the haiku… and the answer is the image. Always the image.
I tried once or twice before to match the image to an already written haiku and it’s just too tricky. The words have such powerful storytelling, it’s near impossible to find “just the perfect image” to partner with it. It’s much easier for me to start with an image I like and then flip through magazine pages to find words that will eventually make up the haiku. (Nothing is ever pre-planned, but rather made entirely out of the serendipity of the moment and what comes across my path that day, mixed with how I’m feeling.)
They're a perfect blend of my writer self and my collage self; They feel like home to me.
I am currently working on publishing a chapbook with all my favourites.
